Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the antidiabetic effects of Aqueous and Methanolic fruit pulp extract of Pithecellobium dulce on alloxan induced diabetic rat. The rats were grouped into five groups, comprising of six rats in each group. Treatment with aqueous and methanolic extracts from Pithecellobium dulce fruit pulp (PDFPA and PDFPE) to diabetic rat resulted in a significant return to normal levels. Both the extracts showed activity at the tested dose level by decreasing glucose level when compared to control group animals. Further studies are in progress to isolate the active principle(s) and elucidate the exact mechanism of action, which will be useful in developing potential plant, based anti-diabetic drugs.
