Abstract

Infection Control guidelines indicate the implementation of personal protective barrier equipment and sterilization protocol in regular clinical practice, to avoid spread or contamination across the operating field. To obtain an understanding regarding an undergraduate’s knowledge on the importance of the use of personal protective barrier equipment and sterilization protocol. 196 undergraduate students – third years (n=83), final years (n=54) and interns (n=59) were evaluated by an anonymous questionnaire. The percentage for each variable was tabulated. Cross tabs were analyzed between each year of study. Data showed that with regard to the practice of hand washing before a procedure, 98.3% of interns followed the protocol whereas only 83.1% of the third years did the same. With regard to the use of personal protective barrier equipment, 83.1% of interns followed the protocol whereas only 26.5% of the third years did the same. Data also revealed that 88.1% of interns knew to recap a needle in an appropriate manner whereas only 9.6% of third years knew the same. Considering the students vaccinated against Hepatitis B virus, 78% of interns completed the cycle whereas only 45.8% of third years completed the same. There was a statistically significant increase in awareness among the interns in comparison to the third years (p>0.005 in all variables). The final years and the interns had similar values for each variable. It is essential to inculcate awareness on the importance of infection control protocol right from an undergraduate level. It is evident that awareness of the required protocol increases as a student approaches the ending of the course. However, it is advisable for newer strategies to be implemented to increase awareness among the third year students.
