Abstract

In previous days people had erroneous belief that vitamin B12 deficiency is improbable except in strict vegetarians or patients with pernicious anaemia. The concept was, therefore, that vitamin B12 deficiency takes around 20 years for its stores to become depleted. The prevalence studies related to vitamin B12 deficiency were thus underestimated in past. The prevalence studies, in last few decades, had reported that vitamin B12 deficiency and depletion are common in wealthier countries, particularly among elderly. The clinical status of vitamin B12 insufficiency is frequent in pathetic populations all around the world. However status of vitamin B12 in people at eastern Nepal was unknown. Thus we carried out investigation in this area and observed that vitamin B12 levels were below the reference range in approximately 21 % eastern Nepalese people. Among affected individuals, about 61.8 % females had undergone insufficiency states and 35 % young women in age-group 21- to 30-years-old were more prone to vitamin B12 inadequacy. Hence we conclude that women suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency in eastern Nepal are young  and is a concerned issue to health problem, the underlying cause of which has to be resolved.
