Abstract

Objectives: To evaluated the quality of early infant diagnosis at level 4 hospitals in Murang’a County, to determine trends of HIV sero- conversion among HEI and to determine HEI data in terms of timeliness, completeness and accuracy between January 2011 and December 2014
Design: A retrospective review of HEI registers
Setting: Level 4 Hospitals in Murang’a County between January 2011 and December 2014
Subjects/Participants: HIV exposed infants (HEI) registers to identify the infants. Study design was retrospective review of HEI registers, Jan 2011-Dec 2014.
Results: Total number of infants records studied was 1066.  HIV positive results were 45 (4.2%). Mean age was 10 weeks, males constituted 526 (49.3%) while 32 (3 %) had no documented sex. Documentation on age and sex was 1039 (97.5%) and 1035 (97.1%), respectively. Timeliness was 114 (10.7%). Results’ feedback to the requesting facility was 1001 (93.9%). Rejected samples were 5 (0.5 %). HIV infection was noted as well as poor timeliness and undocumented details.
Conclusions: The study showed bottlenecks in the PMTCT intervention system and HIV early infant diagnosis. Quality of data documentation and reporting were also insufficient.
